B1 Speaking and Listening Test

The B1 Speaking and Listening test for the UK's English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) qualifications assesses your ability to communicate in English at an intermediate level. The Speaking test involves a face-to-face interaction with an examiner, where you'll be assessed on your fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary while engaging in a conversation about everyday topics. You'll also be asked to describe a picture and express your opinion. The Listening test comprises three parts, each testing different aspects of comprehension.

Passing the B1 Speaking and Listening test demonstrates that you can understand and communicate effectively in everyday situations, such as social interactions, work, or travel. It is a widely recognized qualification that can open doors to opportunities in the UK, including education, employment, and immigration. Studying and practicing for the test will help you develop your English skills and prepare you for the challenges of communicating in a native English-speaking environment.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates are assessed on the following criteria:

  • Accuracy: The ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

  • Fluency: The ability to speak smoothly and coherently without significant hesitations or repetitions.

  • Vocabulary: The range and appropriateness of the vocabulary used.

  • Interactive Skills: The ability to engage in a conversation, understand and respond to others, and ask and answer questions effectively.

  • Listening Comprehension: The ability to understand the main ideas and details of the listening passage.

London PHV Drivers

It is essential for public safety that all London PHV drivers are able to speak, listen, read and write in English at an appropriate level.   The appropriate level is equivalent to level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference, which is the equivalent of the standard reached in the early years of secondary school.   You will be required to undertake a Speaking and Listening Assessment which will consist of a 15–20 minute conversation.   The assessment will be undertaken by a secure video or telephone link within TfL premises to our service provider, PeopleCert, a global leader in the assessment and certification of professional skills.  You will need to pass the Speaking and Listening Assessment to demonstrate that you have the required skills to listen and speak in English at the appropriate level.

British Citizenship Course

The B1 Speaking and Listening Test is a mandatory component of the UK Citizenship Course. It assesses candidates' proficiency in spoken and listening English at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The test has two parts:

  • Speaking Test: A 15-minute interview that includes various tasks, such as describing everyday situations, expressing opinions, and asking and answering questions.

  • Listening Test:  A 25-minute audio recording with multiple choice and short answer questions that test comprehension of spoken English.

Passing the B1 Speaking and Listening Test is an essential step towards obtaining UK citizenship. By preparing thoroughly and following these tips, candidates can increase their chances of success and demonstrate their proficiency in spoken and listening English at the required level.
